What is Jadau, and why is it important to Pomegranate?
What is Jadau, and why is it important to Pomegranate?
One of our favourite things: the traditional Indian art of jadau setting. The word jadau means to insert and in this style of jewellery accent gemstones are in-set into a host gemstone to embellish the piece. This is a dying art and it is hard to come by karigars who are still able to complete this work. Katie greatly values each piece of this art that she finds on her trips to Jaipur.
Katie has worked with the same Jaipur workshops for over twenty years. It's one of the reasons our pieces look unlike anything you'll find elsewhere.
Is your jewellery handcrafted?
Is your jewellery handcrafted?
Our jewellery is specifically hand crafted and indeed the main reason that we choose to work in India is because of its grand tradition of jewellery making and intricate hand worked design.
Many of our pieces are one of a kind, using organic or asymmetric gemstones that could only be set with bespoke, hand made settings.
Likewise the abundance of bead work that you see on this site also. These are not processes that can be automated or designs that can be machine made.
Are Pomegranate pieces truly one of a kind?
Are Pomegranate pieces truly one of a kind?
Most of our jewellery is, yes, and that's by design, not accident. Every piece begins with a gemstone that Katie has personally selected - an Iranian turquoise, a luminous cabochon sapphire, a tourmaline in an unexpected shade. Because each stone is individual, no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
Where a piece is truly a one-off design, that's noted in the product listing. Once it's gone, it's never restocked, which is part of what makes a Pomegranate piece so special and worth keeping!
Are your precious metals hallmarked?
Are your precious metals hallmarked?
Yes. Our precious metal jewellery is hallmarked by the London Assay Office, which independently verifies the metal content of each piece.
Our jewellery is made in sterling silver or high carat gold (usually 18ct). Where a piece is described as gold plated silver, this means sterling silver that has been micron-plated with 18 carat gold.
We have never used stainless steel or base metals. At a time when many jewellers have moved away from precious metals due to rising prices, we want to make clear that we only work with precious metals.
Who selects the gemstones used in your jewellery?
Who selects the gemstones used in your jewellery?
Every gemstone in a Pomegranate piece is personally chosen by Katie, a GIA-trained Graduate Gemmologist with over two decades of experience sourcing stones.
Katie works with the same trusted dealers she has known for years.
Who designs your jewellery?
Who designs your jewellery?
Our jewellery is designed by our founder Katie here in the UK and she works in collaboration with a small number of select workshops in Jaipur, India.
Traditional elements of Indian jewellery making are incorporated in our designs and many of the pieces come into being simply by serendipity and by the gemstones that are found on a particular trip.
Is your jewellery ethically produced?
Is your jewellery ethically produced?
Katie has worked in Jaipur for more than 20 years and knows all her workforce personally and particularly choses to work with small workshops and family businesses where trading practices are transparent and easy to monitor.
Are the materials used in your jewellery ethically sourced?
Are the materials used in your jewellery ethically sourced?
Our suppliers in India have to buy gold and silver from government approved refineries and we also strive to use recycled metals were possible. Our recent order work has been totally made out of recycled silver, for example.
Diamonds are sourced from companies who are part of the Kimberley process. The Kimberley Process (KP) is a multilateral trade regime established in 2003 with the goal of preventing the flow of conflict diamonds. The core of this regime is the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) under which States implement safeguards on shipments of rough diamonds and certify them as “conflict free".
Gemstones are mined all over the world and the supply chains are complex and it would be impossible to scrutinise each step from source, as much as we would like to. Most of the worlds coloured gemstones are bought to Jaipur for cutting and polishing. Suffice to say, we buy our gemstones from trusted sources and people that we have worked alongside for decades.
